Orange-breasted Trogon

A finely hand-coloured lithograph from John Gould’s A Monograph of the Trogonidae, or Family of Trogons, first published in London in 1838. The work was the first substantial monograph devoted to the trogon family and formed part of Gould’s important series of nineteenth-century ornithological publications.

The plate depicts a male and female Trogon aurantius, described by the German naturalist Johann Baptist von Spix, shown perched amongst foliage. Characteristic of Gould’s ornithological plates, the birds are presented with considerable attention to plumage, colouring and naturalistic detail.

Lithographed and printed by Hullmandel and Walton, one of the leading lithographic printing firms working in London during the period and finished by hand in colour.

Presented in a gilt frame with a decorative, ruled wash-line mount.
