Characteristics

Schooner on a Choppy Sea
English School, late 19th Century

A charming coastal marine painting depicting a gaff-rigged schooner under sail in choppy waters beneath a dramatic, cloud-laden sky. Executed in oil on board, the composition captures the power and atmosphere of the sea, with rolling waves, circling seabirds and distant vessels emerging through the haze beyond. Indistinctly monogrammed in red lower left

The artist has skilfully balanced the imposing rocky cliffs with the open expanse of water, creating a composition rich in depth and movement. The restrained palette of cool blues, greys and earthy tones enhances the moody maritime character of the scene, while the crisp highlights of the breaking surf bring energy and life to the painting.

Presented in an attractive moulded gilt frame with cream slip, the work is ready to hang and would make an appealing addition to both traditional and coastal-inspired interiors.
