Characteristics

Salzburg
By Henry Boddington (1849–1923)

A charming and atmospheric watercolour of Salzburg by the British artist Henry Boddington, dated 1896.

The composition depicts a quiet architectural passageway beneath a historic arch, animated by elegantly rendered figures moving through the shadowed arcade. Executed in a delicate palette of muted earth tones, greys and soft blues, the painting beautifully captures the character and ambience of the old city, with Boddington's confident handling of light and architectural perspective creating a strong sense of depth and place.

Inscribed 'Salzburg' and dated '17.8.96' to the lower left, the work was painted during the artist's travels and reflects the enduring appeal of continental European subjects to late Victorian painters. The subtle treatment of the figures and the evocative play of light beneath the archway lend the scene a distinctly atmospheric quality.

Presented in a tasteful gilt frame with a decorative mount, the work is ready to hang and would make an attractive addition to a collection of travel paintings, architectural studies or late Victorian watercolours.
