The Tragic Demise of the White Gallinule
By Le Gun (British Contemporary Artist)
From the Ghosts of Gone Birds Portfolio, 2011

Screenprint in black and white, 2011, on Somerset 300gsm paper, signed and dated in pencil, inscribed ‘A.P.’ (an artist’s proof aside from the edition of 125), from the portfolio Ghosts of Gone Birds, printed and published by Jealous, London, the full sheet, with a deckle edge, in excellent condition

A striking and imaginative screenprint by the enigmatic contemporary artist Le Gun, created in 2011 for the acclaimed Ghosts of Gone Birds portfolio. Executed in black and white, the composition presents a richly detailed narrative scene centred upon the extinct White Gallinule, combining elements of folklore, satire and historical illustration to create an image that is both visually compelling and thought-provoking.

Rendered in Le Gun's distinctive graphic style, the work depicts a dramatic encounter between man and bird within an exotic coastal setting populated by sailors, explorers and curious onlookers. The intricate line work and densely patterned surfaces draw upon traditions of woodcut illustration, political cartooning and storytelling imagery, creating a composition rich with symbolism and dark humour.

Produced as part of a project raising awareness of extinct bird species, the print balances playful invention with a more serious reflection on humanity's impact upon the natural world. The monochromatic palette enhances the theatrical quality of the scene while allowing the artist's meticulous draughtsmanship to take centre stage.

Printed on Somerset 300gsm paper and published by Jealous, London, this artist's proof is presented in a contemporary black frame and remains in excellent condition
