Landscape of a River Estuary
Watercolour, dated 1904
A charming early twentieth-century watercolour depicting a tranquil river estuary scene, capturing the quiet atmosphere of a coastal inlet under a soft, overcast sky. Several sailing vessels lie at anchor in the calm waters, their reflections shimmering across the estuary, while a small rowing boat rests in the foreground near the shoreline.
Adding narrative interest to the composition, two figures can be seen gathering or working along the water's edge, lending a sense of daily life and human activity to the peaceful landscape. The artist has employed a delicate palette of muted blues, greens and earth tones, creating an atmospheric study of light, water and distance.
Initialled indistinctly, possibly B.S.P., and dated 1904 lower right, the work is presented in a traditional gilt frame with mount and glazing, complementing its understated Edwardian charm.
