A striking and thought-provoking screenprint by contemporary British artist Hannah Bays, created in 2011 as part of the acclaimed Ghosts of Gone Birds portfolio. Depicting the extinct Passenger Pigeon within a bold graphic composition, the work combines powerful symbolism with a strong visual impact, reflecting upon themes of extinction, memory and humanity's relationship with the natural world.
Rendered in dramatic black and white, the design centres on a monumental skull motif incorporating the silhouette of the Passenger Pigeon, creating a compelling juxtaposition between life and loss. Radiating forms and theatrical imagery lend the composition a poster-like quality, while the stark contrast and carefully balanced design evoke both historical narrative and contemporary graphic art.
The Passenger Pigeon, once among the most numerous birds on earth before its extinction in the early twentieth century, has become one of the most potent symbols of human-driven environmental change. Bays' interpretation transforms this story into a visually arresting and memorable image, combining humour, symbolism and social commentary.
Part of the influential conservation project Ghosts of Gone Birds, the print was produced to raise awareness of extinct species through the work of leading contemporary artists. Printed by Jealous, London, this artist's proof remains in excellent condition and is presented in a contemporary black frame.
