A richly atmospheric and evocative giclée print by contemporary British artist Dafila Scott, created in 2011 as part of the acclaimed Ghosts of Gone Birds portfolio. The composition depicts a group of Pink-headed Ducks gathered at the water's edge, their distinctive forms emerging from a landscape of deep reflections, warm earth tones and luminous colour.
Executed with a painterly sensibility, the work combines expressive brushwork with a subtle layering of colour and varnish to create a dreamlike quality. The ducks appear almost suspended between memory and reality, their presence heightened by the glowing palette of russet reds, muted blues and soft pinks. Reflections in the water and the simplified forms of the birds contribute to the contemplative atmosphere, reinforcing the themes of loss and remembrance that underpin the project.
The Pink-headed Duck, once native to the wetlands of the Indian subcontinent and now widely regarded as extinct, has long fascinated ornithologists and conservationists. Scott's interpretation captures both the beauty and mystery of the species, transforming it into a poignant meditation on disappearance and the fragility of the natural world.
Produced as part of the influential Ghosts of Gone Birds initiative, which brought together leading contemporary artists to commemorate extinct bird species, this artist's proof was printed and published by Jealous, London. Presented in a contemporary black frame, it remains in excellent condition.
