Characteristics

Two Costume Designs by Alfred Maltby (1852–1924)

A delightful pair of original pen and ink costume studies by the noted artist and illustrator Alfred Maltby, dating from the late 19th to early 20th century.

Executed with Maltby’s characteristic elegance and fluid line work, the drawings depict two fashionable female figures in theatrical or fanciful costume. One figure is shown carrying a staff across her shoulders, while the other stands in an elaborate gown adorned with decorative detailing and a flowing train. Both works beautifully capture the grace, poise and charm of the period’s fascination with costume, theatre and society dress.

The drawings are signed on the left-hand study and initialled on the right, and are presented together within a decorative mount and refined gilt frame that complements their delicate character. The carefully chosen presentation enhances their appeal as a striking decorative piece while preserving the intimacy of the original works.

Alfred Maltby was a respected British illustrator and designer whose work appeared in numerous publications and exhibitions during the late Victorian and Edwardian periods, making these studies both attractive and collectable examples of his draughtsmanship.
