Giclee print in colours with varnish, 2011, on Somerset 330gsm paper, signed in pencil, inscribed ‘A/P’ (an artist’s proof aside from the edition of 125), from the portfolio Ghosts of Gone Birds, printed and published by Jealous, London, the full sheet, with a deckle edge, in excellent condition
A beautifully observed and atmospheric giclée print by contemporary British artist Chris Rose, produced in 2011 as part of the acclaimed Ghosts of Gone Birds portfolio. Depicting the extinct Atitlán Grebe gliding quietly amongst reeds, the work combines remarkable naturalistic detail with a contemplative sense of stillness and loss.
Rendered in rich, luminous colour, the composition captures the bird within its wetland habitat, surrounded by tall reeds reflected in deep blue water. Rose's careful attention to light, reflection and surface texture creates a striking sense of realism, while the tranquil setting invites reflection on the disappearance of a species once native to Guatemala's Lake Atitlán.
The restrained palette of cool blues and greens is balanced by the warm tones of the bird's plumage, drawing the viewer's eye to the solitary grebe as it moves through the water. The vertical format enhances the intimacy of the scene, framing the bird within its fragile environment and emphasising the conservation themes central to the Ghosts of Gone Birds project.
Created for the influential portfolio celebrating extinct bird species, the print was produced to support awareness of biodiversity loss through the work of leading contemporary artists. Printed and published by Jealous, London, this artist's proof is presented in a contemporary black frame and remains in excellent condition.
