Characteristics

Bishop's O'o
By Ben Newman (Contemporary British Artist)
From the Ghosts of Gone Birds Portfolio, 2011

Screenprint in colours, 2011, on Somerset 300gsm paper, signed in pencil, inscribed ‘A/P’ (an artist’s proof aside from the edition of 125), from the portfolio Ghosts of Gone Birds, printed and published by Jealous, London, the full sheet, in excellent condition

A vibrant and engaging screenprint by contemporary British illustrator and artist Ben Newman, created in 2011 as part of the acclaimed Ghosts of Gone Birds portfolio. Depicting the extinct Bishop's O'o perched amongst stylised foliage and flowers, the work combines Newman's distinctive graphic aesthetic with a poignant reflection on biodiversity and loss.

Rendered in bold, flat colour and simplified geometric forms, the composition celebrates the striking appearance of the Hawaiian honeycreeper through a contemporary visual language influenced by mid-century illustration and design. The bird's vivid yellow markings stand out dramatically against the lush decorative background, creating an image that is both playful and memorable while quietly acknowledging the species' extinction.

The Bishop's O'o, once native to the Hawaiian Islands, became extinct during the twentieth century as a result of habitat loss and introduced diseases. Newman's colourful interpretation transforms the bird into an icon-like presence, preserving its memory through an accessible and visually compelling composition.

Produced as part of the influential Ghosts of Gone Birds project, which united leading contemporary artists in support of wildlife conservation, the print was produced by Jealous, London. This artist's proof remains in excellent condition and is presented in a contemporary black frame.
