RUSH SEATING WORKSHOPS

Learn traditional rush seating at our Northamptonshire workshop.

We run practical, small-group rush seating workshops for beginners and those looking to develop their skills. Choose from a one-day workshop, where you'll learn the basics of rush seating while making your own stool, or a two-day workshop, where you'll learn to rush a chair of your own.

Workshops run from 10am–4pm, with all materials and tools provided, as well as a locally sourced lunch and refreshments throughout the day. No previous experience is necessary.

We can also arrange private workshops for groups or individuals, tailored to your experience and what you would like to make. Please get in touch: flora@summerfieldandscott.co.uk to discuss dates, group sizes and what you have in mind.

A TALE OF RIVERS, RUSHES AND REVIVAL

our services

Seat restoration

We offer a specialist restoration service, weaving new rush seats for a wide range of chairs, stools and benches — from traditional 18th-century ladder backs and Arts & Crafts dining chairs to more contemporary pieces. We have even reworked designs such as the iconic Wishbone chair, replacing its original Danish cord with rush to create a more durable and characterful finish. Our pricing is based on the size and complexity of the seat, with standard chairs typically starting from £175.

If you have a piece in need of attention, we’d be very happy to discuss your project — please get in touch at flora@summerfieldandscott.co.uk

The Rush Project

Launched in 2025, we established the Rush Project with the aim of championing and reimagining the heritage craft of rush weaving. Rooted in centuries of tradition in the East Midlands and across Britain, rush as material is now finding new life in furniture making, restoration, and contemporary design. Our mission is to support its creative potential and ensure its skills thrive for future generations.

Rush once lined church aisles, softened stone floors, and was woven into baskets, mats, and chairs. Always gathered close at hand, it was a material of both necessity and beauty — humble, renewable, and endlessly useful. From these roots grew a craft that still endures today in the distinctive rush seating found on chairs across Europe.

We work with Schoenoplectus lacustris — the common club rush. Tall and supple, it grows in abundance along British waterways and has been prized for generations. Ours is harvested by hand from the River Ise in Northamptonshire, less than a mile from our workshop, keeping our work grounded in the landscape that sustains it. Alongside this, we are cultivating our own rush beds on site — supporting new growth to secure our future supply and revive a once-thriving local industry that played an important role here centuries ago.

We believe that rush is highly versatile. Its natural colouring and texture complement any period of furniture or furnishing, making it equally at home alongside antiques or in ultra-modern interiors.
